Compassion

Hello blogosphere, it’s been awhile. :| I have been busy with school & I am greatly disappointed with my feelings of unattached forlorn in regards to this site & Skeletons MB. However, I’m sure that a new layout & accomplishing everything on my to-do list will surely draw me back into the passion I had for all of this.

Coincidentally, my daily tarot today expressed exactly what I’ve been meaning to discuss. Tarot cards & horoscopes are completely erroneous, but they’re fun to read so I subscribe to them:

The Judgement card suggests that my alter ego is The Compassionate One, whose superpower lies in revelation of my life and worldly events. I will reflect a sense of gratitude for my life and those involved by showing humility, forgiveness and charity. By doing so, I feel a strong redemption for past events — a great liberating feeling. I have punished myself enough and am free at last. Clearing the conscience through forgiving yourself and others can bring an overwhelming sense of peace and joy.

Lately I’ve been stressing out about my academics at UCLA & how I’ve made a mistake that may have cost me the ability to graduate by 2012. However, I don’t regret not realizing my mistake earlier because even though I should’ve taken a chemistry class instead of my Molecular, Cell & Developmental Biology (MCDBio) class on HIV/AIDS & STDs, I gained so much insight from this “mistake”. :)

My MCDBio class mandated volunteering at organizations for 12 hours & accounted for 20% of our grade. My professor spoke of how roughly 100 students were enrolled, thus contributing 1200 hours of community service to non-profit organizations assisting those living with HIV/AIDS. I found his compassion to be inspirational & his usage of authority to dictate such an assignment to be applaudable. The experience I had volunteering for Being Alive was remarkable. I found myself wanting to do anything & everything I could to help. My assistance was constantly being praised by the staff, which made me feel as though I was an integral addition to the organization even though I only answered calls & shred documents. Something inside me stirred to feel the utmost compassion for this organization & to continue my services there despite completing my 12 hours. :D

This experience has made me reflect a sense of gratitude for my health, life, & how thankful I am that I am felicitous enough to be the one helping a charity instead of being one. :hugs: Had I not made the mistake of taking this course, I would’ve never been exposed to Being Alive. I’m thankful that my greatest concerns involve school & allocating my time wisely to my research in Hepatitis B & C. That is significantly better than worrying about becoming resistant to antiviral medications. I need to stop punishing myself & stressing out about little things & enjoy life a little more. The fact that my biggest “predicaments” are grades & research are indications of an auspicious life. ^^

Sometimes we forget how good we have it because we can only see the bad, but the sooner we revel in our good fortune, the sooner we can experience that “overwhelming sense of peace & joy.” After taking that class & completing finals, I’ve felt nothing but peace & joy. Then again, I am finally 21 now. ;)

I swear if I’m not the first comment on this, I WILL FLIP. I reread your comment and it made me so happy and then I saw this new post and I got even happier! :D

Can I just say that I love chemistry and if you go to med school in NYC we could so have chem study parties?! lol jokes but that would be awesome! WHICH BTW YOU’D SO GET INTO! ;) Anyways, whether or not you’ll be able to graduate by next year, obviously what you got out of your predicament (I just had a Blindside moment, I hope you get that reference hehe) is a great revelation. Like you said, we’re so concerned with all the problems in our lives that we don’t realize how good our lives really are. Even if the work you did for Being Alive was minimal, it’s still a huge help and it opened your eyes to a bigger picture. And that’s so great! Like this post made my heart melt! Oh Tiff! You and your words make me wanna go run outside at 1am and hug a tree!

I’m glad that even though the class wasn’t a great choice for your long term plans, it did still impact you and in a great way at that. And I missed your birthday! HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY! I was just stalking your Harry Potter party pics yesterday. ;)

WAIT. If you go to NYC for med school def hit me up! I won’t know what college I’ll be at by then but def a north east school so we could still bond! That is if my family doesn’t drive me up the wall and I don’t choose schools in a different country. :D

Your comments crack me up. I’m glad that you liked my blog. GO HUG A TREEEEE they give you oxygennnnn! haha :D I’m glad you’re stalking my HP party pics. ;)

I seriously hope that I get into NYU or Columbia whenever I decide to apply or Upstate..or just..ANYWHERE ON THE DAMN EAST COAST. I love my family, but I still want to move the hell out of California & go somewhere new. :) I’lllll hitcha up girl, next time I’m in NY! We shall have a twinsie reunion. If you’re not 21 by whenever we meet, I’ll buy you some booooze. ;) Just kidding, that would be inappropriate of me & if some cop read this, I’d be screwed haha.

:O ! YOU ARE BACK NOW?!! For sure?! :O ! I’m sure with enough motivation, you’ll get back to work! :P ! On the site and the forum! Which I haven’t been that active on because I have loads to do :X.

I hope you’ll find some way to fix the mistake that you made with the courses :X! Ahhh! Now this makes me paranoid for college! Because one false class can mess you up D’:! Especially– since it’s UCLA! Though, it’s not all bad :) ! The course on HIV/AID’s and STDs helps you in a way that you gain more knowledge! :D

Happy 21! :D ! You are now finally legalized- fully :D ! In the state of California, unless I am missing something :O !!

There was an incident that happened :X! Like- my host closed, and my old domain got stuck in the process and there’s no use in reviving it D:! And it’ll expire in like a couple of months!

Thank you :D ! My backgrounds are obnoxious -___-! I guess the way the blog is set up is at its best! :O ! I used a macbook pro a couple of weeks back, but your screen- is 21.5″ :X! But I somehow managed to fix the font on my site a bit for you :P . I hope it’s okay now :X! I was using 100%’s for my fonts o__O!

LA is horrible now! But I still love it for.. The.. stores that’s in it :O !

Take care (:!

woho you’re back!! :D i’m looking forward to see your new layout and to read your future-blog posts! sometimes we all just need a break from this web world.

so happy birthday, finally 21! :D

i’m glad the course (even it maybe wasn’t the right one in the first place) gave you a new and remarkable experience in the long term, sometimes things happen for a reason, haha :D but i totally agree with you, sometimes it is hard to realize how good our life really is compared to what others don’t have. we should appreciate what we have more and be lucky we can be the helping hands, not the other way around.

aw thank you!! :D i think my new theme ended a little messed up as it don’t work properly in internet explorer, but i will at least take time to fix the font size soon! totally forgot “normal” on my computer don’t neccessary is normal on others, lol!

Wow I found this post to be tugging at my heart strings. I am so glad you are so dedicated to this cause because it really is a dreaded disease. Someone very close to me actually suffers from HIV and it hit me pretty hard when he told me. So thank you. Also, I try to help a little too haha. I don’t directly volunteer but I go to Gay Bingo every month which is run by ACOS (Aids Care Ocean State) and all of the proceeds go to fighting HIV/AIDS. Its really cool and a fun way to help a great cause!

Tiff Reply:

Aw I’m very delighted to hear that you go out of your way to help out. People don’t realize that we still have to deal with it in the US & that even though the percentage of people still living with AIDS in our age-group is “small” or “unheard of” these days, it’s still a threat. Even more so, the highest populated area with AIDS is sub-Saharan Africa & they alone are the huge chunk of the pie that account for the population of people infected with HIV/AIDS.

I think a lot of people are still very uneducated about the disease that they don’t understand how it can be spread so they often freak out when they’re in the same room with someone with it or they expect the person to be weak, frail, & dying…but that’s not the case at all. Despite all of this, they still need our help! There’s much progress on the fight against the disease. I doubt that we will ever find a cure, it would be nice to see one in our lifetime, but I doubt we will find a for sure cure, but we can attempt to stop it from spreading, which is kind of the best chance we have at beating it.

Reply

Josh Reply:

Hmmm i actually think quite the opposite and that we are really close to a cure. There was actually a man that was actually already cured of the disease. They injected him with stem cells from a man that was immune to the disease, but then of course the controversial topic of stem cells come up.

Reply

Tiff Reply:

That happened to be one patient though so we cannot say for certain that injecting someone with a bone marrow stem cell transplant who happened to be immune to HIV would have the same effect universally. The virus is different in everyone that is affected with it & changes with everyone as it is constantly mutating.

The funding for that kind of research would be through the roof & to deal with the people who are against stem cell research is also another obstacle. I feel that there hasn’t been enough research into the actual “Berlin patient” to understand what really happened. He may not have any more replicating HIV virions in his system, but what if they’re just suppressed for the time being? This was fairly recent, so you kind of have to remain skeptical, but not so much that you lose hope of course.

Welcome back Tiffany! :D I’m sure you can get a new layout going soon, and you’ll definitely find the inspiration out there. I have been far too engrossed in fanlistings lately so I think I need to revert to blogging and commenting again. I still enjoy it, just needed a sort-of break. :P

I think I am grateful for making a lot of mistakes… even if they were mistakes, some good definitely came out of them. Knowing that you volunteered and learned a lot throughout that time as well as reflecting that gratitude is a good thing. It’s not often that people help charities and I think it’s always admirable reading about when someone does. I think we all need to look on the bright side, because failure breeds success in so many ways. I mean, Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard! XD I am pretty sure that even he realised that mistake taught him many things too.

Happy (belated) 21st! *huuuugs* I’m sure you had a fantastic one. :D <3

New designs always renew my interest in my websites…although I usually realize I don’t have any time once they’re finished, so they really don’t accomplish anything in the end.

But I digress…

Last year, my school implemented a new system that requires all students to complete ten hours of community service a year before they can graduate. Before that, I never even really thought about community service. Not gonna lie, I was a little unhappy about it at first. Even though twenty hours in two years is nothing, it just sounded like a lot. But I started volunteering at my town’s library, and holy crap, did it feel nice. Of course, it didn’t come with the same appreciation for life that you got out of your work with Being Alive. I just made paper crafts with a bunch of little squirts. Still, I did grow to appreciate what I have and learn to love to give back. Even though I have all my hours, I’m volunteering there and at the old folk’s home again this summer.

I always like to think that our mistakes happen for a reason, and it looks like yours really turned around into something awesome. Yeah, you might have to stay in college for a little longer, but what’s an extra semester or two in the big picture?

Reply

Tiff Reply:

haha we have a quarter system, so it’s significantly less than a semester, half the time actually, so it won’t be a big deal at all! Things didn’t work out the way I planned, but as long as I get to where I want to be, that’s allll that matters.

& I keep thinking that you’re a senior. I think it’s also because I’ve known you for a while & assumed you were about to enter your college years any day now. Sheesh, plus I haven’t been in high school for 3 years so that’s also a contributor to that whole, “ZOMG YOU’RE STILL IN HS?! WTFF” dealio. hahaha.

Awwwww *hugs* that’s so sweet of you to continue volunteering at your town’s library. I think I’d fall in love with that job too. I mean, working with kids or just helping out the community is a really great way to contribute something back to the community that offers you lots of stuff. :)

A lot of schools in my area are implementing that requirement actually & I think it should be across the nation. I mean, I realize that some people really just don’t have the time or ability to, but it’s such a good way to reform kids..or at least turn them on to an experience similar of what we had..just realizing that we take so much for granted & that helping out your community shouldn’t be dreadful, but something that makes you more than willing/happy to do. :D

Ahh, so true. Eric is always saying ‘You know, we’re much better off than so many other people’ and he’s right. I’m just a whiner. The fact that we worry about such things just means that we’re doing alright. I’m glad you got such a positive experience out of the assignment. More professors should assign work like that because it truly does make such a difference. That’s a huge chunk of community service hours that I’m sure helped immensely. It’s like I always say, everything that happens is meant to be. Something good almost always comes out of something you once thought was bad. And now I sound like a bad book of cliches. :ouch:

Ahh if you make a new layout I’ll be so excited lol. Your layouts are always ahhmazing.

Thanks for the compliments on the new layout, but I changed it again LOL. You know me, I never keep a layout for too long. This one I actually really like, though, so I think it has a good shot at staying up for at least a month. :)

Ahh agreed. I honestly was just so sick of hearing everyone praise her and holding in the rage that was bound to erupt eventually. At the beginning I was like ‘Okay, I can deal with this’ and then as she gradually got worse and worse I started to die a little inside. And that is so true about MTV. Some of the crap they play on MTV makes me cringe when I realize that my daughter will someday watch it. That’s the mommy in me though lol.

Tiff Reply:

I definitely don’t believe that everything happens for a reason because I’m not religious & I don’t think that someone’s mom dying at a young age or genocide happens for a reason. So, that’s a snippet of my logic on that part. I just made the best out of the class I took instead of the chemistry class I should’ve taken.

I really do wish more professors would assign this kind of thing though. Yeah it’s a “hassle” because it’s “extracurricular,” but helping out your community is beneficial.

hahaha I wish I had more time on my hands to actually create a new layout as often as you do. I just can’t, I’m way too busy & I can’t believe you even find the time with being pregnant & all..but now you should be due!!

Wow, it sounds like it was an interesting class. I really do wish the college I previously attended was more in tune with academic classes that gave us real world insight like this.

You’re such a positive thinker. Even though things are not always set in stone for us, things still generally work out for the best, and you seem to think this way more often than not. It’s very refreshing.

p.s-thanks for the coding advice! B)

Thank you. :) I’d like to be quite optimistic, I’m a bit of a dreamer, but I’m also a realist too. We’d all like to fantasize about a world with just good people, but there are always going to be some bad apples, even if we eradicate all of them! haha.

I’m sure that going out & living your life will bring you much more insight & experience than sitting in a classroom learning about the technicalities behind something. Although I am very pro-education, life lessons are very important too.

I’m not starting college for a couple of months and I’m already worried about not being able to finish on time. :wah:

I think everything happens for a reason and that’s obviously been proved for you. I’m glad you could find something that makes you feel like you’ve made a difference; I think that’s a feeling everyone strives for.

Tiff Reply:

I’m sorry I totally am replying to you super late hahaha I fail… -_-

But anyway, I don’t actually believe that everything happens for a reason. Norway’s shootings, famines, wars, all of that serves no higher purpose & if some divine power thinks that innocent people have to die like that to teach us a lesson of some sorts, that’s pretty screwed up, in my opinion.

Don’t stress out, honestly, it’s not a big deal if you don’t finish in time. I’m actually thrilled to be at UCLA for another year. A lot of people I know who aspire to go to Med school like me take a while to get there, so it’s not a big deal. If graduate school isn’t on your mind, no need to fret, seriously, everything can be finished just in time. I’m sure you may even find that you might be able to even graduate early if you so chose to!

I’ve been posting less than usual lately too, mostly because of school.

I’m so worried about college already, and it’s still 2 years away. I’m pretty sure of what course I want to take, but everyone tells me how stressful it is. I’m just trying not to worry about it now.

I myself haven’t really done any charity work, but we go on an outreach every year in school. Those sorts of things really give you another way to look at things and encourage you to reach out to others. It also makes me just so much more thankful for everything I have.

Belated happy birthday!

Tiff Reply:

Don’t worry too much about it. I think that if you have your career path in mind or that you have an idea of the field you want to get into, or what your passion is, you shouldn’t stress too much about it. Especially if your career path doesn’t require a heavy amount of sciences & math, then you really don’t have much to fret about..or if your career path doesn’t require graduate school. Of course, that’s a horrible generalization as each major has its hardships, but we all know that studying English is a lot easier than studying for quantum physics.

Hey Tiff! Glad to see that you’re back! :)

You know, it’s really admirable to see that you’ve found so much joy in volunteer work for a great cause. Even though it was a “mistake” for you to take that course, it sounds like you really gained a lot of fulfillment out of the experience. It’s really true. Sometimes we just don’t open our eyes to see how fortunate we are, and we should appreciate what we have, no matter how stressed we can be. Because the truth of the matter is, there is always going to be somebody else who has it way worse than you do.

Thank you! Yeah, you know I always appreciate your constructive feedback on my layouts. Sometimes it can be hard to decide what works in a layout and what doesn’t, especially when you’ve been staring at it for hours. But I think I’m about ready for a new layout already. :)

No, I haven’t done a tour of the college yet, but I’m hoping to fit one in this summer. I’ve heard wonderful things about the college I want to go to, and that the campus is beautiful. I can’t wait to see it for myself. :)

Haha, hippos are my favorite animal. xD

Hippos are awesome! Be sure to take lots of pictures when you start touring college campuses!! Do lots of research on them. The right college will be really good at your interest & if it speaks to you..if the professors there are world renowned & constantly doing great things, go for it!

Yes, there will always be someone out there who has it worse than you & people tend to forget that. Which is fine, but sometimes when we’re huffing & puffing over having the worst day ever, we just need to calm down for a second & think about how it could be worse.

You’ll be okay! I’ve notice that the blogging world has slowed down. When school’s in session that’s everyone’s excuse and then when school’s out it’s summer that gets in the way. It’s all good though! It’s life and you’re supposed to enjoy it and it doesn’t have to be in front of a computer screen 24/7.

Also, I’m glad that your mistake had turned out perfect and for a great cause. I feel horrible because I volunteer for Cystic Fibrosis and Cancer. I donate to those and I tend to ONLY donate to those. I feel bad but there’s not enough time or moeny in the world for me to help out every organization. you know? I also do other thing like making cards and visiting and encouraging patients.

I also feel like I always complain and rant about life. I enjoy it but the things you tend to remember to blog about are the worst moments but life my life is a lot better than others out there. I have a roof over my head and loving parents that do care about me, whether I say they don’t, they really do. I really want to change my ways and start encouraging myself and others. I recently made a new friend and he (Just a Friend) has shown me that the littlest things are great.

Another thing, I read a comment above. East Coast rocks! Lol, I live in Jersey and want to transfer far enough away from home but close enough to drive back to visit every once in awhile. I’m thinking in the Philadelphia area but NYU is a GREAT school!

Reply

Tiff Reply:

Well there are definitely tons of charities out there that may weigh heavier than Cystic Fibrosis, but you have your reasons, I’m sure. I try to give charities that approach me a bit of money, even if it is very little.

For graduate school, I’d love to just live so far away that it takes a plane ride to get to me. I think changing up your environment is important because you get to experience a new culture, lifestyle, & something outside of your initial comfort zone. We’re creatures of adaptation, so I kind of crave being elsewhere than California as much as I love California.

Sounds like you met a really great person. :) Honestly, just watching a documentary on countries that are poverty stricken really puts your problems in perspective. I read a lot of books on such problems & it’s disheartening. Another person’s suffering really makes you realize how great you have it & it’s a bit absurd that we have to use someone else’s misfortune as a marker for how good we have it, but we’re very…well, short-term focused. Not many of us are big-picture thinkers. haha.

It’s funny how everyone seems to believe that they’ll be more active when summer comes around…but instead it seems that the warmer the weather gets, the lazier people become. It’s as if we don’t want to risk doing anything too strenuous or something. But I wouldn’t worry about not updating, since most of the people online know that there is life away from the Internet, and for those that don’t…well, I honestly don’t know what to tell them. :P

As for the mistake that you feel that you made, I am just curious about why you feel that it was a mistake. Is there any reason that you have to get your degree done in a set amount of years? Personally, I think that College/University is a time to explore things that you might not have even considered in High School. *shrugs*

I am glad that you had a good experience while volunteering. I have discovered that you need to choose something that you care about, otherwise you will resent the time you spend doing it. Then again, this may apply to everything in life.

Finally, happy belated 21st! I hope that it was a great one, and that you remember it. I am rather embarrassed to admit that I don’t remember mine…except that I celebrated with 4 other friends – 2 girls and 2 guys, and we had a slumber party. :D

Tiff Reply:

My 21st birthday was really fun! I’m far too afraid to drink to the point to which I don’t remember anything/black out, so I knew when to stop. My parents were home for my party so I wasn’t about to get completely trashed. Too bad you didn’t really remember yours though. I’m sure a lot of people don’t remember their 21st birthdays anyway.

Well in my blog, I wrote that I learned from my mistake, so it was a lesson learned, more than a mistake. Academically, it was a mistake, experience wise, it wasn’t. The reason for it being a mistake was that I shouldn’t have taken the class, I should’ve taken a Chemistry class so that I can get my sciences for pre-med out of the way. I went to a community college, I’ve explored my options, & I’ve been thankful for taking that route instead of going to a University straight away. It took me a while before I chose Anthropology as my major, but it is now. Since 6th grade, my dream has been to be a Dermatologist, so there’s no reason for me to waste extra time in school as it’s 1. a waste of money 2. another year I’ve lost when I could’ve been helping people.

By the time I’m 30, I’d like to be finishing up my residency for Dermatology, married, & possibly have a child. I’m taking an extra year at UCLA to finish my sciences. I’m not in a “rush,” I’m just on the normal track to get to where I need to go, I’m just taking a little bit longer than those that are at the top of their class. So yeah, there is a reason why I should get a degree & my M.D. in a set amount of time: because Medical Schools are incredibly tough to get into & the MCAT is one of the most difficult exams to do well on.

I’ve been pretty active this summer though, doing research & what not, but not so much online. I don’t care though, this stuff, it just isn’t important.

Yes, absolutely. We could sit & dread our mistakes for the rest of our lives, or we could just embrace them & take it as a lesson learned. Potstickers are indeed delicious! But I’m sure if he never over cooked the potstickers, we’d still have it. It is quite easy to make instead of dumplings. :P

Thank you for the belated birthday wish. I love being 21!!

Sometimes mistakes can lead to something great :) That is great that you experienced Being Alive and that it changed you. Maybe that will be your calling, working for a charity/non profit org. That would be really cool, to help and serve people in need everyday. I remember we were talking about (way back when haha) that you loved to help people, so this could be what you are meant to do. Also it is not a mistake if you loved the class. You learned something new that could help you in the future. Even though you want to be a dermatologist (am I right? lol), it might have a link to HIV one day. It’s good to be well rounded in other medical sides. Don’t worry about graduating in 2012. You could take summer courses? Take a course at a community college again? Or stay an extra semester. Whatever you choose it’ll be great :) Also congrats on becoming 21, you are officially an adult :D

Dermatologists deal with lesions caused by all sorts of STD, so there is an overlap. My situation is incredibly complicated to describe to you without having to write a lengthy comment, so I’ll just save you the time/trouble & say that I don’t really care about staying an extra year at UCLA because I love the school & it’s for the best anyway. I already am taking summer classes & it’s just inevitable. Medical schools aren’t happy with those that take pre-requisites at CCs, so it’s not a big deal. I’m happy with the way & direction my life is going haha so yeah.

I’m in my second year of university and ever since I got here, I’m always conscious about the same thing, finishing on time. But sometimes, there’s no need to hurry as long as I am graduating some day crosses my mind. Wow, UCLA! I applaud you! Graduating from that university is already a big thing. And it’s going to happen some time soon!

By the way, how was A Clockwork Orange? It’s the book then turned into a Stanley Kubrick’s film in 1963 right? I haven’t read the book nor seen the movie yet, but I’ve heard a lot about how good it is.

I’m in the same mindset you are: it doesn’t matter how long it takes you to graduate, just as long as you graduate. I mean, I’m trying to push myself to graduate in a timely matter because I need to apply to medical school & get on with my life/career, but I don’t need to stress myself out. Just as long as I get everything done & get good grades, that’s what will get me there faster. :) Patience, it is. :D

But thank you for the applaud! :) I’m only about 4 chapters into A Clockwork Orange & let me tell you, it’s an incredibly difficult book to read because of all of the vocabulary/slang the author uses. I constantly have to have my iPad next to me with the list of definitions of all the slang terms he uses. It’s going to take a while for me to finish the book because of it. It’s really chaotic right now…I mean, it’s only the 4th chapter & already two girls got raped! :O

Oh, you’re reading A Clockwork Orange, what a coincidence XD Lately a friend and I were arguing about that book and especially the movie, btw have you seen it? What do you think of it?
This friend mentioned above reckons the movie is way better than the book, but I doubt it (although I haven’t seen it, but I’m definitely going to), I mean, how can you change a huge amount of parts of the book and the movie can still be good? Anyway, I’m talking too much, I was just interested in your opinion.
And happy birthday btw ;D Now you can officially drink alcohol (as far as I know) ;D Poor America ( I just had to say this xD)…

:D

Well to be honest, I don’t mind the law & don’t think any country should really pity our 21+ year-old drinking age limit because we all know 18-year-olds are a bunch of hooligans anyway. Fresh out of high school, thinking they’re hotshots because they may or may not go to college. I don’t know, I know that we make poor choices when we’re young & after all, alcohol is one of the worst drugs out there & is incredibly damaging. I still partake in drinking alcohol, but I do understand why the law is the way that it is.

I’ve yet to see the movie & I haven’t finished the book yet, so I have no opinion for now.
